The Met Gala, formally known as the Costume Institute Gala, and also referred to as the Met Ball, has been a showcase for fashion and the party of the year for decades. The first Met Gala was held in 1948, in New York City. The Gala always has a theme. These themes allow the guests to come in costume, and this tradition and now Gala staple, started in 1971 when the guests were asked to dress to the theme Fashion Plate. Since then, the Gala has held many different themes, the most recent being Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.
At this year’s Gala, some of the biggest names in entertainment and design enjoyed a walkthrough gallery and dinner. They also walked the red carpet, the only televised event of the Gala, showing off their themed looks. Some of the best dressed were Rihanna Fenty and Chadwick Boseman, Fenty wearing Maison Margiela and Boseman wearing Versace.
Rihanna has made headlines every year she attended the Gala, landing the 2015 special edition Vogue cover. This year, Rihanna was one of the best dressed due to the fact that she dressed for this years theme perfectly while looking fun and fashionable: She wore a Maison Margiela custom cloak, mini dress, silver Christian Louboutin heels, Maria Tash earrings, and an embellished pope hat. This look received lots of attention because, while her outfit was definitely a statement, it was not gaudy.
Another look that made the Gala was worn by Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman. His look was a creation by Gala co-chair Donatella Versace. Dressed in a pure white tux embellished with crucifixes and other solid gold detailing, complemented by a long flowing cape of pure white, also embellished with crucifixes of solid gold and held up by gold and red tassels. His look was another that fit this year’s theme excellently, earning him a spot on this year’s best-dressed list.
Throughout the history of the Gala, there have been may themes and many different guests. This event remains one of fashion’s biggest, and will always be considered “the party of the year.”
