Bagels are truly a magical food. You can put anything on them. You can make them into sandwiches, pizza, and they are great with just cream cheese or butter. But haven’t you ever wondered how they taste so good and look so cool? Well, wonder no more! This quick and easy guide will teach you how to make bagels right from your own kitchen.

You will need:

  • 2 teaspoons, instant yeast

  • 1 Tablespoon, dark brown sugar

  • 1 ½ cups, room temperature water

  • 1 Tablespoon, salt

  • 4 cups, bread flour

  • 2 teaspoons, baking soda

  • About ½ cup cornmeal & flour for dusting


Step One: Get a hold of a large bowl. Mix together the two teaspoons of yeast with the tablespoon of brown sugar and the 1 ½ cup of warm water. Stir in the salt and flour (make sure you stir it well). Knead the dough until it is smooth. Afterwards, cover the bowl and let it sit for two hours.


Step Two: Get a decent sized cutting board and dust it with a bit of flour. Put the dough onto the cutting board. Acquire a dough knife and cut a 4 oz. portion of the dough and form it into a ball. Do this until you run out of dough. Allow the dough balls to rest five minutes. Poke a hole in the ball with your finger and smooth out the sides (make the hole however big you want). Put the bagels on a cornmeal-flour dusted tray. Cover and refrigerate overnight.


Step Three: Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Dust another tray with a mixture of cornmeal and flour.


Step Four: Grab a large pot, fill it two-thirds full of water and bring it to a boil. Put a couple bagels in the water at a time but don’t let them touch (if you are scared of them touching, just put one in at a time). Let the bagels boil two minutes on each side, then flip them. If you did it correctly, they should firm and puff up. Remove them from the water and let them drain for one minute over a rack.


Step Five: Add whatever toppings you like to your bagels and put them on the tray. Put them in the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Rotate the tray 90 degrees and cook for another five minutes or until the bagels are golden brown. Remove the bagels from the tray and let them cool for about 30 minutes before trying to cut them.


Step Six: Now your bagels are done! Enjoy your delicious, magical treats.
